How to Layer Fragrance Oils: Vanilla + Tonka
Vanilla and tonka are one of the easiest and most rewarding pairs to layer. Both live in the warm, sweet end of the fragrance world, so they blend instead of competing, and together they last longer and feel richer than either one on its own.
Meet the Two Oils
Vanilla After Dark (goes on first)
Top: Mandarin, Pear, Pink Pepper, Liquorice
Heart: Tuberose, Daffodil
Base: Cedarwood, Patchouli, Vanilla, Coffee
Tonka Trouble (goes on top)
Top: honey, light citrus
Heart: vanilla blossom, heliotrope, almond
Base: warm vanilla, musk, sandalwood, tonka bean
Why These Two Work Together
The two oils meet in the base: Vanilla After Dark dries down to cedarwood, patchouli, vanilla and coffee, while Tonka Trouble settles into warm vanilla, musk, sandalwood and tonka bean. That shared vanilla is the bridge. Vanilla After Dark adds depth and a darker edge (coffee, patchouli), and Tonka Trouble adds softness and sweetness (honey on top, almond and heliotrope in the heart).
The result is a cozy, gourmand blend that reads warm and polished rather than sugary.
How to Layer Them, Step by Step
- Start with clean, moisturized skin. Oils cling better to hydrated skin, so a plain unscented lotion first helps the scent last.
- Apply the deeper oil first: one dab of Vanilla After Dark on each wrist and the base of your neck. Give it about a minute to settle.
- Add Tonka Trouble on the same spots, one dab each. Applying the softer oil on top keeps its honey and almond notes noticeable instead of buried.
- Don't rub your wrists together. Let the oils warm and blend on their own.
- Check again after 20–30 minutes. That's when the shared vanilla base really comes through.
Make the Blend Your Own
- Softer and sweeter: two dabs of Tonka Trouble to one of Vanilla After Dark.
- Darker and evening-ready: two dabs of Vanilla After Dark to one of Tonka Trouble.
- Split placement: Vanilla After Dark on your neck, Tonka Trouble on your wrists, so the blend changes as you move.
Tip: before wearing any new fragrance oil all day, try a small amount on a patch of skin first.

Frequently Asked Questions
Which oil should go on first?
The deeper, heavier oil (here Vanilla After Dark) goes first, and the softer one goes on top so both stay noticeable.
How many dabs should I use?
Start with one dab of each per spot. Fragrance oils are concentrated, so it's easier to add than to take away.
Can I layer these with other oils?
Yes. Both oils are warm and sweet, so they also pair well with other vanilla, amber and musky oils.
